Minsk Resident: Aliens Commandeered Ministry Of Education
YAUHENIA PASTERNAK

The main thing is to remember that "aliens" in the Belarusian government are not eternal, and to rely on yourself.

Minsker Yauhenia Pasternak, a graduate of the faculty of Physics of the Belarusian State University, wrote a post on Facebook about the discussion on the ten-point / five-point assessment system that started at the suggestion of Vice-premier Vasil Zharko.

"Each time, it gets harder and harder to comment on news about education. How can you comment on the decisions of aliens?

The day before yesterday, I heard on the radio that this year the result of the central testing appeared to be 10-15 percent better than in the past. Yesterday I realized that our education had no other problems, except how to change the point system.

What can I say to people who suggest this?

My daughter, a seventh grader, said without interrupting her reading: "Mom, relax, it makes no difference."

Probably, now this is the only tactic for survival.

It makes no difference.

You can get teachers to wear a uniform. It will make the last enthusiasts vanish out of the school.

You can go back to the ten-year school course. We have just sorted out the consequences of the introduced and immediately "withdrawn" twelve-year course.

You can make everyone join the pioneer organization. Some people still have illusions that they exist not only on paper.

You can start classes at ten. And then go back to eight. But, most importantly, not at once, but when everybody gets used to it and adjusts himself to the fact that the classes start later.

You can introduce an obligatory uniform. So that everyone would look the same. Made of polyester, when one would be unable to pick his size. And so that everyone would wear uniform at the physical education lessons. Including the shoes. And if one takes size 46, he would have to travel to a specialized shop. Which would be just the only one for the whole country and would work three times a week on weekdays.

It’s a good idea also to ban private lessons. And to fine, if it becomes known at school.

And not to allow them to leave school until six in the evening, so that only the parent would be able to collect the child from school against signed receipt.

In other words, there are lots of ideas, all of them are brilliant, the topic is inexhaustible.

But it makes no difference already.

Just because there are no programs on some of the subjects yet. The textbooks are not printed. There is a disastrous shortage of teachers. The standard of knowledge is crumbling, despite the hysterical simplification of programs, pupils cannot cope with them. You can enter a university by getting 5 points out of 100.

Against this "well-being", only people who have some kind of alien tactical thinking, which is a mystery to us – common humans, – can change the ten-point system to a five-point one.

It's sad, of course, that the aliens have seized the Ministry of Education.

If not for those wicked aliens, they would teach children in schools instead of doing paper work. The teacher would be a respected and well paid professional. Children would go to school with pleasure, and, when leaving school, without any private tutors (why tutors, if all the best teachers work in school?) would enter the university. And the rest of the graduates would have enough knowledge and skills to work and do what they like best without getting higher education. The school would teach what is useful for life, the school would provide a choice of programs and subjects, the school would develop talents and abilities of the pupils.

I do not know whether it makes sense to hope that this will ever happen. The change of the assessment system in the current situation is a control shot in the head.

Let’s live on. And educate children by ourselves.

Aliens are not eternal. I hope."
