Former KGB Head Sukharenka Resigned From Development Bank
STSIAPAN SUKHARENKA

Stsiapan Sukharenka is notorious for his statements about the rats during the 2006 elections.

Stsiapan Sukharenka headed the KGB in 2005-2007, worked in the Development Bank from 2017. He came there at the invitation of Siarhei Rumas (the former chairman of the bank, now the prime minister) and headed the department of information security and protection.

As Nasha Niva has learned, Sukharenka no longer works there, which was confirmed by the Development Bank. It is known that 61-year-old Sukharenka left the post last summer. But the reasons for his dismissal and his current place of work are still unknown.

Stsiapan Sukharenka is best remembered for his statements about rats. Allegedly, on the election day in 2006, Lukashenka’s opponents were going to poison the water supply system with dead rats. Sukharenka assured that the opposition was planning to blow-up schools and to seize the power forcefully with the help of militants from Ukraine, Georgia and former Yugoslavia. However, the exposure of the “plot” was never followed by the trials of the “terrorists.”

After being dismissed from the KGB, Sukharenka was the ambassador of Belarus to Armenia for seven years.
