Brest Protesters Set Ultimatum

Activists and residents of the city are ready to come out to the central square.

Opponents of the I-Power battery plant, which is now being built in the Free Economic Zone "Brest", said that if the authorities of Brest and the region do not stop the construction of the plant within a week, they are ready to protest in the main square of the city, Brestskaya Gazeta writes.

At the same time they refer to Article 35 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, which states that freedom of assembly, rallies, street processions, demonstrations and picketing that do not violate the rule of law and the rights of other citizens of Belarus is guaranteed by the state. The procedure for carrying out these measures is determined by law.

As Raman Kisliak, a lawyer and human rights activist, stressed, the authorities' inaction in this situation is pushing people to such actions.

"When legal norms do not work, when appeals to state bodies are made, naturally, the sense of justice, the struggle for one's interests and rights forces people to move away from legal solutions to the problem and proceed to more radical methods, including protest. That is, the authorities themselves are to blame for this," - Kisliak believes.

Earlier, activists sent official appeals to the City Executive Committee and the Regional Executive Committee with a proposal to hold meetings on the construction of a battery plant. The City Executive Committee responded that the facility did not belong to its competence, but the Regional Executive Committee stated that the plant was being built in accordance with the law and there were no grounds for a temporary ban of the construction.

While the battery plant is being built near Brest, a large-scale campaign has been launched in the city and the region against the appearance of this plant in the Free Economic Zone. As of the evening of February 12, 33,576 signatures were collected, but the collection continued after that. In particular, in one of the busiest places in the city, only 627 signatures were collected over the weekend. It is planned that this week all the collected votes against the plant will be submitted together with the appeal to the administration of Lukashenka.
