Brest Dwellers To Authorities: We Will Take To Square

If the authorities do not stop the construction of the plant before the end of the week, Brest dwellers will take to the square.

Regional and city authorities of Brest region do not pay attention to the people's demand to stop the construction of a battery manufacturing plant near the city. Despite the fact that 35 thousand signatures have been collected against the construction of the plant, the authorities respond with runarounds to the appeals of the citizens, Belsat reports.

Residents of the city and the nearby areas are afraid of potentially dangerous emissions, and the authorities do not see any problem in this, and tell the Brest residents that the plant will be built.

Now the disgruntled Brest residents are discussing the possibility of holding street protests, if the authorities do not stop the construction. In particular, the United Civil Party activist Aliaksandr Kabanau announced his intention to take to the square.

"I issue an ultimatum to the authorities: if the construction of the plant does not stop in a week, I will take to the square. I will megaphone people about the harm of the plant. I will megaphone that the construction must be stopped and that such protest will be held every Sunday," - he said.

Many Brest residents support this kind of development of events, the human rights activist Raman Kisliak said.

"In my opinion it were the authorities who made people think of such a protest. Moreover, the intention to take to the square is still a light option. Many people with whom I talked, who live there, are ready to hinder this construction in more active ways. People saw how the authorities treated them, read the answers of the authorities and no longer believe in legal mechanisms. That's why this happens."
