Belarusian citizens have outstripped the "power that has lost its way" in time.

Liavon Barshcheuski, a public figure, the former chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front party has told Radio Racyja why the authorities do not aspire to the national spirit, but hold on to the Soviet one.

– Education Minister Ihar Karpenka has already said that the country is going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Komsomol, and state officials practically do not mention the celebrating of the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian People's Republic. Why is this happening?

– The descendants of the repressive regime are now in power, and the Komsomol was the structure of this regime. And they hold on to these symbols just to show that nothing has changed in the country, it is headed by the same people. And the younger generation is given a "message" for the future, that these "Komsomol members" will continue to run the country. So that people do not really think that this can and should be changed. The Komsomol remains a symbol of clinging to power. They want to show that it is unshakable and eternal. They strive to create this particular illusion.

– But the BPR's 100th anniversary is a significant date for the entire country ...

– This date just does not fit into their paradigm. The BPR was created by the Belarusians, and the Komsomol and the BSSR were "Soviet people". This decision was made not in the country, but in Moscow. Today's authorities are not yet able to recognize that Belarusians can have continuity of their traditions and clings to Stalinist-Leninist ones.
