Statkevich, Lukashenka... Who Will Become the Next President of Belarus?

The situation is unique.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka will not feel alone on the next elections. The opposition is determining its presidential candidates. The United Civil Party (UCP) will nominate Mikalai Kazlou, the acting chairman of the UCP. And the organizing committee for the creation of the "People's Hramada" Party nominates its chairman, Mikalai Statkevich.

It is assumed that Mikalai Kazlou will contend with the leader of For Freedom movement Yury Hubarevich for the nomination from the center-right coalition, as well as co-chairman of the BCD Pavel Sevyarynets, who was nominated for primaries in October. January 17, the Belarusian National Congress, which includes Statkevich's party, is expected to hold a meeting and to nominate a common presidential candidate of the Union of Political Forces. According to the law, the procedure of presidential elections should take place no later than August 30, 2020; the elections for the "House of Representatives" not later than September 10. It is not excluded that one of campaigns may take place this year.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, Mikalai Statkevich, stated in the interview to Belsat:

"The People's Hramada Party nominated me and addressed the Belarusian National Congress to support my initiative. The session begins at 12:00 a.m. on January 17. Later the name of the candidate of the Belarusian National Congress is announced. But the party spoke out. I will, if I am supported, run for president. Now we face a very responsible, extremely dramatic situation.

Lukashenka has driven the country to the impasse; 80 percent of Belarusians hate the dictator. Changes will surely come! Because the people strive for them. We'd like these changes to be peaceful, so that we did not bring any external interference, so that we could preserve our independence. There are no elections now! And the first task to meet is to return the elections and win them.

Lukashenka, I know what kind of a person you are, even though you like girls! Remove my conviction from official records! Let's settle this on fair elections! For the sake of Belarus!
