The officials did not manage to put the believers in opposition to microdistrict residents.

Public discussions on constructing a school and a swimming pool on the site of the New Life Protestant church located in the capital’s district Sukharava took place in Minsk, Belsat reports.

This is the second attempt to seize the church building from the believers. In 2006, the city authorities tried to confiscate the prayer house, but then the parishioners managed to defend it collectively. This time, it is not just a confiscation of the building, but a plan on densification in the microdistrict. It is planned to build high-rise buildings nearby, and a school with a swimming pool on the site of the church itself. According to the co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party, Pavel Seviarynets, the city authorities want to put the believers in opposition to microdistrict residents.

Pavel Seviarynets, co-chairman of the BCD party:

“The hall was full during the public hearings. The authorities did not manage to put the believers in opposition to microdistrict residents. Virtually all those present opposed the plan on densification and destruction of the New Life church. We even voted, and according to the results, it turned out that the absolute majority of people opposed the densification. But the authorities do not hear. They say that people should write appeals, and only then will they react. We expressed our opinion, and the citizens supported us and the preservation of the church. [...] We intend to conduct mass appeals of citizens to the officials. Signatures are being collected. We use all possible legal opportunities to protect ourselves and the interests of citizens. [...]

This is some sort of orgy. I cannot understand why the authorities want to destroy the church. In the end, it turns out that they leave Lukashenka high and dry, because people are outraged. And secondly, we are talking about big money, because there are plans to build high-rise buildings here. Apparently, there are some kick-back schemes and personal interest of some officials who go against the interests and opinions of citizens.”
