Facebook Removes Pro-Russian Pages Functioning In Belarus

The number of subscribers to the deleted profiles was about 790 thousand people.

On January 17, Facebook reported the removing of 364 pages that “intervened” in the affairs of Belarus and other countries of the former Soviet Union, Belsat informs.

The deleted pages published content on various topics – from travel to weather. The links that they published led primarily to the websites of the Sputnik information agency subordinate to the Russian government. The company says that the administrators of the deleted pages were closely associated with this agency.

According to Facebook, page owners misled users about who they were and what they were doing.

“We work constantly on identifying and stop such activities, because we don’t want our services to be used to manipulate people,” – the report says.

In total, Facebook has deleted 289 pages and 75 accounts. Apart from our country, such pages operated in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and even Romania, as well as in Russia itself.

The number of subscribers to deleted profiles was about 790 thousand people.

Since October 2013, the administrators of these pages have spent about $ 135 thousand on advertising.
