EU And Council Of Europe Called On Lukashenka To "Replace Revenge With Human Dignity"

Everyone has the right to life.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić issued a joint statement on the occasion of the European and World Day against the Death Penalty, which is celebrated on October 10, tut.by writes.

European officials remind that the European Union and the Council of Europe strongly oppose the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances. The death penalty is a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment contrary to the right to life, the statement says.

142 countries, representing 74% of the UN Member States, have already abolished the death penalty, either by excluding it from their criminal codes or not applying it for a long time. The trend towards abolition of the death penalty continues, while the number of death sentences and executions is also falling. In 2018, 20 countries carried out executions, representing 10% of the number of countries in the world, which is the historic minimum.

"The states, members of the Council of Europe, that have not yet adhered to Protocols No 6 and 13 to the European Convention on Human Rights, must do so without delay. The Council of Europe and the EU once again call on Belarus to abolish the death penalty and join the community of nations that have decided to replace revenge with human dignity. They also invite the countries-observers in the Council of Europe, which have not yet abolished the death penalty, to participate in a dialogue on the obstacles to its abolition," - the joint statement reads.
