The people understand that it is time to change something in the country.

The traditional Sunday action against the battery plant in Brest grew on May 19 from the usual feeding of pigeons to a march through the city center. More than 300 people took part in the march - 1.5-2 times more than usual.

Representative of the Belarusian National Congress in Brest, activist of the European Belarus civil campaign Andrei Sharenda commented upon the situation specially for the website Charter97.org:

- The fact that on Sunday more people than usual came to the square and the march, is the answer of the Brest residents to the fact of a blatant deception of revealed by the activists during the round-the-clock watch. We learned that in fact, the battery plant near Brest is already operating, and, in violation of all laws, it produces batteries at night. In addition, it pollutes the atmosphere every day - and this was noticed by the activists who are constantly keeping watch near the plant.

Because people gathered and responded to the iniquity of the authorities. The march on Sunday showed that people are serious about change and are not going to stay at home. In addition, political slogans are heard more and more often at our weekly actions: people demand to change the government that allowed the construction of a harmful plant near the city. People demand change at the highest level.

In the yesterday’s march, 300 Brest residents were already compared with the 300 Spartans of Tsar Leonid, who blocked Thermopylae and saved Greece. I think that such a comparison is appropriate. After all, there are 300 Spartans in almost every Belarusian city. Dissatisfaction with the Lukashenka regime is accumulating, every city has its own problems, both environmental and social, therefore, the processes and protests that are now taking place in Brest will sooner or later spread to the whole country. Brest can only be considered a catalyst for objective events, which, I think, will occur in many cities of Belarus - if not this year, then next.

People understand that it is already “ high time”. It's high time to change something in the country.
