Mikalai Statkevich: People In Belarus Are United By One Common Idea

The politician addressed the leaders of all patriotic forces.

On September 15, in Homel, a meeting with presidential candidate of the Belarusian National Congress Mikalai Statkevich was held within the framework of the signature-collecting picket.

Also, pickets of the Narodnaya Hramada party to collect signatures were held in Minsk, Hrodna, Vitsebsk, Polatsk, Novapolatsk, Homel, Mazyr, Kalinkavichy, and Zhodzina.

The politician commented on the meetings with Belarusians in the regions for the Charter97.org news website:

- During the meeting in Homel, I had a feeling that the people in Belarus are united by one common idea. Another consolidating idea has appeared in our country: this is hatred towards Lukashenka and the desire that he leave. This idea sounded not only in Homel, but also in Mazyr, Kalinkavichy and other cities.

Imagine a picture: at the pickets to collect signatures for the activists of the Narodnaya Hramada party, they say through the sound-amplifying equipment: all the people who are against Lukashenka and want him to leave, please come over! People overcome fear and enroll in the initiative group of the presidential candidate from the BNC. Only after the meeting in Homel, over 40 people signed up for it, providing their passport data.

People overcome the fear of dictatorship by seeing at our pickets an example of courage and audacity. It becomes evident that more and more Belarusians want changes. In the first week of collecting signatures, about 730 people joined my initiative group - and this dynamics is growing. After all, pickets were far from exhibited in all cities. People are attracted by the slogan “Lukashenka must leave!”, which hangs on the stands at our pickets.

During the “parliamentary campaign” we plan to assemble an initiative group for the BNC presidential candidate in the amount of 3-4 thousand people - and this is an absolutely solvable task.

We are talking not only about the “presidential election” here, but about creating a broad movement in defense of the independence of Belarus within the formal framework of the initiative group of the presidential candidate from the BNC.

This is a huge task, because we are approaching dramatic changes.

Today we learned about the plans for “integration”, which are already initialed by the governments of Belarus and Russia. What Putin and Lukashenka are going to sign now is simply called selling Belarus. Our country is economically absorbed. Lukashenka is selling Belarus for cheap oil and gas - in order to receive money for the maintenance of his army of officials and security officers and to remain at power of a formally “independent” country.

This is very dangerous, although at first glance it seems that formal independence remains with us. But in fact, if the country is absorbed economically, then a political decision will not be difficult to pursue.

I want to appeal to the leaders of all patriotic forces in Belarus. If until today the “election campaign” could be used to popularize the slogan “Lukashenka must leave!”, now this is acquiring another important aspect: independence must be defended.

And there is a legal opportunity to do this. Therefore, I urge the patriots to come to my meetings, to our pickets - not just to leave their signature, but to express their disagreement with the attempt to surrender the independence of Belarus. We must show that we are against the economic sale of Belarus, against the economic takeover of our country, which inevitably leads to a political one.

At 2 p.m. on October 6, we will hold a legal picket in the format of an “election campaign” in the Freedom Square in Minsk. Let us all get together and show that we will not allow to give away our Belarus.
