Head Of European Parliament Committee On Foreign Affairs: Belarusian Authorities Take Big Step Backwards

Head Of European Parliament Committee On Foreign Affairs: Belarusian Authorities Take Big Step Backwards
DAVID MCALLISTER

Brussels has tied relations with Minsk to free elections.

On Monday, July 6, in Brussels, the European Parliament discussed the situation in Belarus.

The Charter97.org site cites David McAllister, head of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs:

"The agreement on visa facilitation came into force on July 1, and now it's easier and financially more affordable for citizens of Belarus to travel to the EU.

However, after this step forward, Belarus is now taking a big step back on the eve of the presidential elections in August.

Potential presidential candidates and political activists are imprisoned, even common citizens are massively arrested.

Unfortunately, it seems that the Belarusian authorities want the term "political prisoner" back in the dictionary of our bilateral relations.

The process of "critical interaction" with Belarus has led to some positive changes, but the EU has always adhered to the position that progress in our relations will depend on tangible steps taken by Belarus to ensure respect for universal freedoms, rule of law, human rights and the holding of safe, peaceful, fair and free elections in line with international standards.

Thus, the upcoming elections will play a key role in the development of further relations between the EU and Belarus," - David McAllister said.
